Instructions

Raspberries and hemp seed oats
  • Mix oats and hemp seeds. Add Skyr and water and stir.
  • Mash raspberries with honey until it has the consistency of a compote.
  • Layer Skyr and compote in a glass, so you get two layers of each. Cover it and put the glass in the fridge for at least 4 hours – preferably overnight.
Apple and blueberry oats
  • Mix oats and rye flakes with Skyr.
  • Add grated apple, water, and honey and stir into the porridge.
  • Top with blueberries and cover with a lid or cling film. Put the porridge in the fridge for at least 4 hours – preferably overnight.
Orange and ginger oats
  • Toast hazelnuts in the microwave for approx. 1 min (you can also roast them on a pan until the shells crackle and the nuts start to smell). Cut the hazelnuts in half and mix them with oatmeal and Skyr.
  • Peel oranges and remove the membrane. Fillet the oranges along the membrane over a bowl so the fillets loosen without the membranes.
  • Add the orange juice to the porridge along with ginger.
  • Cut the orange fillets into smaller pieces and place them on top of the porridge. Cover and put it in the fridge for at least 4 hours – preferably overnight.
Enjoy!
Tips

Get the ratio right! When making overnight oats, it is important to add about twice as much Skyr or yogurt as oats. If you do not add enough liquid, the oats will be thick and pasty. However, if you add too much liquid, the hearty breakfast will turn into a soup-like mixture. So, it is essential that you find the right balance between oats and liquid, whether that be Skyr, yogurt, or milk, to achieve a porridge-like consistency. Be sure to give the oats a good stir before digging in. The ingredients may have settled after hours in the fridge. Thus, mix the porridge before you relish it to get an even texture throughout the mixture.

Questions about overnight oats

A delicious breakfast does not require hours of prep and many ingredients. With our overnight oats recipe, you get the best make-ahead breakfast that saves you loads of time in the morning. Read on to learn more about this modern-day version of porridge with a fresh twist.

How to make overnight oats?
Make overnight oats with rolled oats and Skyr as the main ingredients. You can make three fruity variations with our overnight oats recipe by adding a variety of different components. Mix the ingredients and garnish the porridge with the fruit elements on top. Cover the oats with cling film before letting them sit in the fridge for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
How long do overnight oats last?
Overnight oats can be refrigerated for up to 5 days if you make sure to cover them with cling film or store them in a jar or an airtight container. The longer they sit in the fridge, the softer the oats become, which may be preferable if you like a creamy consistency. The shelf life mostly depends on the ingredients in the overnight oats. Variations with berries tend to only last for about 2 days before the berries get mushy, while variations without will last a bit longer.
Can you heat up overnight oats?
Overnight oats are usually served chilled, but you can heat the porridge in the microwave at low heat if you prefer to enjoy them warm instead. It will make the oats creamier with a texture like freshly cooked oatmeal. Keep an eye on the fruity toppings when using the microwave. You may want to add the fruit and berries after microwaving the porridge or they will get too mushy.
Can I freeze overnight oats?
Freeze overnight oats for 3 to 6 months, depending on the ingredients. It is best to portion the oats into different airtight containers since it is easier to thaw single portions instead of a whole batch. Leave enough space at the top of the containers for the oats to expand during freezing. To avoid freezer burn, ensure that the containers do not touch the base or sides of your freezer. Thaw the frozen oats overnight in the fridge or leave them at room temperature on the kitchen counter for a couple of hours until thawed.
When to add fruit to overnight oats?
Fruit can be added to overnight oats in many ways. Mix it with the oats, layer it between the porridge mixture or use the fruit as a topping to give the porridge a finishing touch. If you are planning on eating the overnight oats the next day, add the fruits when you are making the porridge – whether it is in the oat mixture or simply garnished on top. If you are meal-prepping for several days, you might consider waiting with the fruit or berries until you know when you are going to eat it.

Add your own touch

Experience different flavours and textures and try overnight oats with chia seeds. Chia seeds provide a mild nutty flavour and help absorb some of the liquid in the oats, resulting in a thicker consistency. Mix the seeds with oats and Skyr to get a creamy texture with a little bit of crunch. You can also add chopped dark chocolate or cacao nibs.

If you like extra creamy and thick oats, make overnight oats with yoghurt. Yoghurt yields a sour taste that matches the tart flavours of the fruit and berries used in this recipe. Give the oats a little extra love with warm spices such as cinnamon, cloves, or cardamom that will enhance the aromas in the recipe. The combinations of flavours are truly endless. Experiment and find out your favourite.
