Dal Makhani

Popular Indian casserole rounded off with butter - Makhani in Hindi. This is an easy dish made of red lentils. Serve with rice and preferably a dollop of yogurt and mango chutney.

Ingredients

Garlic cloves

Green chilli peppers

Fresh ginger

Tomato paste

Butter
50 g
Red lentils
200 g
Cinnamon stick

Salt
½ tsp

For serving

Natural yoghurt
200 g
Mango chutney
2 tbsp
Coconuts Chips
2 tbsp
Fresh ground coriander
1 handful

Lemon rice

Basmati rice
240 g
Organic milk
450 ml
Vegetable bouillon
1 tbsp
Ground ground turmeric
1 tsp
Lemon
Juice And Peel Of 1
Salt
1 tsp

Instructions

Step 1

  • Peel and finely chop the garlic. Deseed and chop the chilli and grate ginger finely.

Step 2

  • Fry the garlic, chilli, tomato paste and ginger and the chopped chilli, in butter in a frying pan for about 2 minutes Add the lentils, cinnamon stick, salt and 700ml of water. Boil for about 15 minutes until the lentils are soft.

Step 3

  • Garnish with coriander. Serve with yogurt, mango chutney and possibly coconut chips.

Step 4

  • Rinse the rice. Boil milk, broth and turmeric in a thick-bottomed saucepan.

Step 5

  • Add the rice and cook as directed on the package.

Step 6

  • Fluff up the rice with a fork and stir in the lemon juice and peel. Season with salt.
