WHAT Does Arla JÖRĐ Mean?

WHAT Does Arla JÖRĐ Mean?
Jörð is an earth goddess in Norse mythology

The mother of the god of thunder, Thor, her beautiful name means earth in old Norse. We chose the name Arla JÖRĐ because not only are our oats sourced from the Nordics, but we’re also proud of our Nordic brand heritage – it runs right down to our roots, through everything we do to create delicious great tasting products. We do things differently at Arla JÖRĐ, we do things Nordically.

How Do I Pronounce JÖRĐ?

Well, we won’t sugarcoat it, It’s a tongue-twisting word, especially the ö. Starting with the ‘J’ at the front, pronounce this as a ‘Y’. Then if you think of ea in earth – you can call it Yearth, Yeard - you’re on the right track. Don’t worry about getting it wrong, we’re really not that particular about how you pronounce it.

You know, the d is actually really old and derives from the letter edh or eð. It was used in Old English, Middle English, Icelandic and Faroese. In the Middle Ages, we also used the letter in Scandinavia where it was eventually replaced with dh and later d, as we know today. You can still find the old edh letter on Faroese and Icelandic keyboards.
