Our Responsibility

We believe that sustainability is central to corporate responsibility and our environment strategy recognises that the decisions taken today impact on the long-term future of Arla.

In launching our strategy, we are the first dairy processor to include not only our own operations but also those of its farmers. This demonstrates our determination to lead the way in embracing the environmental challenges the dairy industry faces right throughout the supply chain.

We have set ourselves challenging targets and have deliberately stretched ourselves. Having a robust set of environment targets doesn’t just make ethical sense, it makes good business sense.

Our overall target is to reduce our CO2 emissions by 34 per cent by 2020, within our own operations, from a 2005 baseline.

Our other targets are as follows:

  • 30% of our energy will come from renewable sources by 2020
  • We will reduce the amount of water we use by 20% by 2020
  • By 2012, we will not send any waste to landfill
  • We will meet the Courtauld 2 target of a 10% carbon reduction in packaging by 2012
  • We will meet Dairy Roadmap targets of incorporating 30% recycled plastic in our fresh milk bottles by 2015 and 50% by 2020
  • We will support our farmers to reduce on-farm emissions

An important part of our strategy is to form strategic partnerships with customers and suppliers so that we work consistently, proactively and collaboratively to meet and exceed their expecta-tions as well as climate change and key voluntary agreements.

The targets we have set ourselves in the UK, will enable us to make a significant contribution to Arla’s overall global target of a 25 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020 within the areas of production, transport and packaging.
